Paint Splattered Days

We are all born to create, and doing so is one of the most rewarding pastimes ever. Some of us have the creativity beaten out of us by the world, but somehow this did not happen to me, although my college professor told me to pick another major. I might have been too stubborn to listen. The last few years, I have been painting, drawing, and generally creating on top of my work in our ornament business.
Each step in the journey to have my work recognized has been a learning experience. I am now presenting some new West Texas-themed art, which is available in beautiful, museum-quality Giclee prints and even available beautifully framed.

Deciding on a theme might be the hardest part, as the world gives us so many ideas. Honing in on a theme might just be the gift that an artist has been waiting for, because when an artist can figuratively put the blinders on and rule out most of the incoming noise, then the singularity of purpose will allow the purity of ideas to flow. Then the limiting thoughts are placed at bay as the artist dives deep into the chosen subject. This is exactly what I did when I picked West Texas for my current theme for this series of paintings. I have diverged somewhat when I painted the Zinnias, but I have stayed true to this theme for some time. I intend to do a dozen West Texas paintings and then make a left turn.
My next series will be based on people, real people who existed and lived their lives in this town I call home. Most of these people I did not know, only knew of as some were famous or infamous. For this series, I will be working with the Seguin Heritage Museum, which houses an amazing collection of photographs spanning the history of my hometown. A collection of a photographer who took our pictures for over fifty years, maybe longer, and before him, a collection of another photographer who also chronicled our town and its people. These collections are so rare that the University of Texas wanted to have them, but the family decided that they should remain in our town. And I will be painting big.
I am doing my research now and have cleared out a beautiful space in the back of my office downtown. This larger space will allow me the room to paint big. I am painting on primed Masonite panels for the West Texas Series and will be switching to stretched canvas for the Home Town series, all with acrylic paint. This idea seems perfect for me as our family has been here for four generations. It is funny how a place can take on a personality and literally play a part in our lives, as it has done for me and many others.
