When I was in the seventh grade our parents took my sister and me to the State Fair of Texas. It was somewhat traumatic as I forgot my suitcase at home, but we did have fun and even saw Here’s Love, the Broadway play that was being presented during the Fair. Finally, when I was a Freshman in college we went back as a family. That year the Statler Hilton in downtown Dallas, where we were staying, messed up our reservation and we ended up in the Presidential Suite. That was a good mix up and where I saw my first bathroom phone. I guess the President might need to talk.
As state fairs go, Our State Fair of Texas is a Great State Fair, and as the song goes, don’t miss it, don’t even be late. Bill, my husband, and I have spent many sweltering days in the Cotton Bowl watching the The Red River Shoot Out football game between rivals The Texas Longhorns and The Oklahoma Sooners. Now let us review the facts, the game is always in October during the State Fair of Texas and I remember when it might have been a slight bit cooler. I attended the game with Bill when we were in school at The University of Texas. Then I wore a cute corduroy jumper with a matching scarf. The last time I attended I wore shorts a big hat and was so hot that I thought they might have to haul me out on one of those stretchers precariously balanced over the seats and down the steep steps. That was the last time. But The State Fair is still fun and has so much to offer, even a Kitty Keller ornament! We have been designing a cloisonne ornament for the State Fair of Texas since 2013. The ornament for this year just shipped out and it will be waiting for you in the official State Fair of Texas store, but don’t wait too long. They always sell out.
